Magazine front cover analysis
This is the front cover of the latest NME magazine, NME use the same style of front cover generally and this is the cover I have chosen to analyses. The Main image is of the hit TV show Inbetweeners , I noticed how they are all in the characters uniforms which makes you notice them without the costumes they may well not be as noticeable to the audience this is why NME have not displayed them in there everyday clothing. They are all looking at the camera with there noticeable expressions from the TV show also Will in black looks as if he isn’t messing around while the others are causing mayhem this also links to there characters personalities.
The background displays poster pull outs from previous magazines also Simon far left is carrying a collection of NME magazines, this could well be a ploy by NME maybe they are trying to show the Inbetweeners love NME the audience will be lead into thinking they are big fans of NME and possibly buy it all the time.
The pull quote “we really enjoyed our unpaid time here” is meant to link to the image it’s a very innocent and doesn’t really draw the reader in to much, the text style used looks scruffy and really stands out form the other text as the rest looks very clean and well presented this has been used to good effect it stands out on the black background, also it kind of links to there characters personas e.g. Childish and different.
The lead article “Meet NME’s new work experience kids, is almost childish as The Inbetweeners are Teenagers not kids the colour scheme has been used well the white on black is a good contrast and helps it stand out fully.
The Cover lines text is in red, black and white depending on the background colour, they have placed the main two other articles down the left with additional information on the headline this draws the reader in to find out more about the article. They have chosen to put this on the left third because this is what we see on the shelves so this will catch the reader’s eyes it’s a very clever layout and has been used to good effect. On the right they list the other bands and topics that feature these bands obviously have smaller articles and are not as popular of a topic as the ones on the right side.
In this addition of NME there is only the logo and price on the skyline usually a skyline will advertise special attractions but on this addition they have chosen against it maybe feeling it would effect the house style.
NME look to try and capture a audience of 14-24 year olds who are into music, that attend gigs, Spend around 500£ on clothes a year and Use the internet regularly, this is why you see a lot of new fashion, Gig reviews and Internet links all the way through the magazine.
The cover for this issue is appealing to readers because it focuses on the most talked about TV program at the moment. Young adults and teenagers will know of The Inbetweeners through countless reasons, this is why NME have taken the characters from the show and not the actors because they are more recognizable. NME list popular bands stories this also draws the reader in as they are the talking point between friends and some readers will find it interesting to know what the band is doing.
I think the front cover is very good as it has focused on a popular TV show that a broad audience watch, The colour scheme works will as there are no words that are distorted by the background. They capture there audiences needs with popular bands and topics. In my opinion they make the perfect magazine for a wide audience.
